Oradell and River Edge are not alone!
We parents are naturally loath to criticize their schools publicly, and professional mathematics are unlikely candidates for public activism; yet impressive numbers of both have come together to promote sensible math curricula and responsible mathematics standards.
The sheer number of grassroots math advocacy groups is sobering. We do not necessarily agree with all material on the following websites, but we believe it is essential to recognize and respect the extraordinary level of concern they represent and the list of those who are concened about these math programs has continued to grow. What follows is a partial list of grassroots organizations that promote authentic, research-based mathematics instruction:
- Teach Utah Kids
- Kids Do Count (UT)
- Investigations Math: a grassroots group in Utah fighting TERC investigations. The website includes:
- a printable flyer (DOC) to help in fighting Investigations math,
- three radio ads!
- UT Coalition for World Class Math
- Utah's Math Future "This site has a single purpose, to show support for a major moonshot in the state of Utah and to create a system that is second to none in educating our children in math. Math is the subject that more than any other, teaches the thinking skills our children need"
Wisconsin Policy Research Institute: studies a wide scope of policy issues with surprising depth and insight. Some of its papers on education are among the best to be found anywhere. See listings for both its WPRI Reports and articles from its periodical, Wisconsin Interest. PRESS: Parents Raising Educational Standards -- This respected Milwaukee group started by Leah Vukmir has had a tremendous impact upon schools in their city and suburbs. The website has a great deal of information of general use, though it has not had much of an update since Leah was elected to the Wisconsin legislature in 2002.
